Revealing the secret life of the skin microbiome
With wellbeing so prominent in peoples’ minds today, more beauty consumers are linking a balanced skin microbiome to healthy looking skin. However, while modifying specific bacteria can have a beneficial effect on skin appearance, it’s essential not to disrupt the overall equilibrium. So how can our industry reassure consumers that personal care products will have a positive influence on their skin’s microbiota?
At this live webinar, DSM’s experts will start with the basics and then share their latest insights on how to understand, visualize, restore, and preserve the natural and individual balance of the skin microbiota:
The basics of a balanced skin microbiome
Build up your knowledge of the skin microbiome, the factors that trigger imbalances, and the link between these imbalances and conditions such as acne, skin sensitivity, irritation, and dryness.
To design effective ingredients that support skin microbiota, we first need detailed and accurate data on their composition. Learn more about our state-of-the-art techniques for microbiota analysis and 3D facial mapping. We will explain how we used our approach to make the beneficial impact of ALPAFLOR® ALP-SEBUM CB on certain bacteria visually tangible to end consumers.
Acne care and the skin microbiome
Acne is the most common chronic inflammation of the skin. It affects 75% to 95% of teenagers but is now prevalent in more than 50% of adults too. We will set out the findings from our in vivo study which showed the anti-acne efficacy of our stabilized Vitamin C derivative (STAY-C® 50) and the new in vitro data on growth inhibition of acne-associated bacterial strains using a combination of the vitamins STAY-C® 50, Niacinamide PC and Allantoin.
Assessing microbiome friendliness
Cosmetic ingredients and products need to respect certain microbial ratios and should not behave in the same way as anti-microbial substances. MyMicrobiome is a new, independent standard for assessing products and individual ingredients for their impact on the skin’s microbiota. We will explain how it works, how it is shaping the industry, and which of our ingredients have been certified “Microbiome Friendly” in line with its criteria.
Our experts will also give an overview of our certified microbiome-friendly, ready-to-use formulations which have been especially designed to deliver a full range of benefits while respecting the microbiome’s natural balance. With time for questions and answers.
Build up your knowledge, reserve your place now for September 21 (45min @ 9:00 or 17:00 CET)!

Join the live webinar on 24th August; 12nn SGT to learn more about: Skinmunity...DSM's 3D Approach to Skin Immunity.
The pandemic has reinforced the importance of having a healthy immune system, as staying healthy is paramount during this time. People became more mindful of their health and increasingly embrace a healthy lifestyle.
‘Clean’ will also be more closely connected with health. Consumers will look towards clean beauty products to promote the health of their skin and hair, and so claims that strengthen the skin’s barrier or immune response will appeal to the growing amount of health-conscious consumers seeking holistic ways to manage their mental and physical health.
Once the pandemic subsides, consumers will aim to protect themselves from harmful pathogens without disrupting the body’s microbiome and destroying beneficial bacteria. The focus on fostering a strong immune system through a healthy microbiome will create more opportunities for products that help consumers achieve this.
Day 1: 28th June; 12nn SGT, China Under the Sun...delve into sun care consumer behaviors, insights, and brand successes.
Discover more about Chinese consumers' rapidly changing usage habits and market landscape in sun care...
In China, we observe rapidly changing consumer habits in sun care protection. More than half of them identify long-lasting protection as the key purchase influencer, products with a high SPF value offer better protection against the sun and often reapply sunscreen when going out.
This focus on reapplication has placed more emphasis on the textures and formats of sunscreen where we see an increasing number of sprays and mists launched in the market. Light textures, a 'fresh' skin feel, and ease of use are key product benefits to communicate to consumers.
There are multifunctional skin wellness products in the market with readily adopted sun protection claims as well. We also expect newer innovations in format and texture to accommodate different skin shades and types, which appeal to varied needs of both men and women.
Day 2: 29th June; 12nn SGT, Post-COVID Lifestyle: the Heritage of the Covid-19 Crisis AND Quest for a Perfect Sunscreen Season III.
Discover how hybrid workplace, being the new normal, affects our overall skin health and be part of another chapter in our quest...
The pandemic has reshaped our daily habits. As working from home becomes the norm, there is an increased awareness on the need to protect the skin when working on electronic devices, as well as when exposed to sunlight.
Exposure to blue light has been magnified, as many previously office-based workers increased their time in front of a screen, as face-to-face meetings have moved to virtual. Zoom-dysmorphia, burn out, the effects on overall skin health and general well-being are the heritage of this Covid-19 crisis.
The physical effects of blue light and extended screen exposure on our faces are even more important as they have become an increased element of our social lives in isolation, which may continue long after the pandemic is over.
And on to another chapter in our quest...
